Home Opener next Saturday, August 16th!!
San Diego, CA – San Diego kicks off the home portion of their inaugural WPFL season on Saturday, August 16th, 7:05 pm at La Jolla High in a rematch against the Long Beach Aftershock.
The San Diego SunFire began the season last Sunday afternoon on the road with an 18-6 defeat at the hands of the improved Long Beach Aftershock at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium. The new and improved Aftershock now have key members of the disbanned Los Angeles Lasers on it’s team, making for a bigger more powerful championship contender. Despite that, San Diego kept the Shock in check until late in the third when the Aftershock took advantage of SunFire turnovers.
The SunFire lost more than the game last Sunday. DL veteran Kelly Loftis was injured in the 4th quarter of the game. Loftis, who is active duty Navy, jumped offside and was hit during her, backpedal. She was unconscious on the field for 5-7 minutes. The 22-year-old suffered neck and spine injuries and is currently hospitalized at Long Beach Memorial. Doctors say they’ll know more as the swelling decreases, but believe that Loftis will regain feeling in her legs. The rehab process is expected to last for 3-6 months. The 2003 WPFL regular season began August 2nd and consists of a ten game schedule for the SunFire. San Diego will play its home games at La Jolla High School.
Last season the SunFire finished its 2nd campaign at 9-1, the best regular season record in the AFWL and Silver Cup Winners of the league. The SunFire returns with some key members of last year’s squads and some impressive rookies. San Diego will play teams like the Long Beach Aftershock, LA Amazons, Arizona Knight Hawks, Houston Energy and the Arizona Caliente.
